Imagine This | Supporting Children's Health

What we do

Imagine This, the only UK charity solely dedicated to supporting the mental wellbeing of seriously ill children and their families across the UK. Founded in 2014 by actors Sarah Parish MBE and Jim Murray MBE in memory of their daughter Ella-Jayne. She spent much of her short life in paediatric intensive care at Southampton Hospital and died at just eight months old. Their personal experience of unimaginable loss became a powerful force, inspiring them to create a charity. The charity spent its first decade delivering transformational projects for children in Southampton Children’s Hospital and other Hampshire based projects. Last year, we evolved our mission to tackle the hidden mental health crisis in seriously ill children.

This July, the charity (formerly The Murray Parish Trust) has rebranded to Imagine This, with a fresh new identity that is more inspiring, imaginative, and accessible, to help us to scale our impact across the UK. Our vision is that our innovative, imaginative and empowering projects reach every seriously ill child, and their family, across the UK, at the earliest possible moment.

Over 1 million children in the UK face life limiting, life-threatening and chronic conditions. These children are far more likely to experience mental health difficulties which can become more complex and difficult to treat or extend into later life. Their childhoods are overshadowed by coming to terms with diagnosis, hospital stays, treatment, feeling different from friends or managing how their illness affects daily life. Many of them struggle with anxiety, low mood, trauma, and isolation.

The strong focus is on medical treatment and their mental wellbeing is often left behind. The impact on the mental wellbeing of the wider family is also clear, parents and siblings often receive no support. Many parents need to give up work to care for their child – adding to the emotional strain. Many siblings play an active part in the care of their brother or sister.

We bring a creative and diverse approach to our projects, driving a nationwide movement to improve understanding of how best to support the mental wellbeing of seriously ill children and their families. Through imaginative, innovative, and empowering projects, we help them navigate their journey with connection, resilience, and hope.

Our projects are delivered in children’s hospitals, hospices, and community settings across the UK. By 2035, we aim to reach every seriously ill child, by delivering a diverse range of projects and emotional support to children and families living through the unimaginable.
